Can I upload a DVD straight to iTunes?

Can I upload a DVD straight to iTunes?
I have an iPod touch. I know that I can put movies on it, because I have one on there from a digital file. Can I put a DVD in my computer and upload it straight into iTunes? Or do I have to use some converter? If I do have to use a converter, what is a good and hopefully cheap one? thanks, im new to iTunes
